PULLMAN, Wash. – Best-selling author and African-American studies scholar Cornel West will present a talk entitled “Democracy Matters” at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum. His talk is part of Black History Month events organized by Washington State University.

West, author of the 1994 best-seller “Race Matters,” has published more than 20 books and numerous essays in which he addresses today’s American racial, cultural and political issues.

“Democracy Matters,” also the title of West’s most recent book, analyzes American imperialism and the development of democracy in the United States and the Middle East.

“Dr. West will undoubtedly deliver an intellectually stimulating lecture. It's an honor to have the opportunity to listen to someone so well respected in the field of race-relations,” James Bledsoe, chair of WSU African-American Faculty and Staff Association, said.

A philosopher and professor of religion at Princeton University, West was among the first black academics to be named University Professor, one of the highest faculty posts at Harvard.

He is also known for his involvement with several political and social organizations, such as the Democratic Socialists of America, President Clinton’s National Conversation on Race and the National Parenting Organization’s Task Force on Parent Empowerment.

West has been involved with the music and movie industries, including his work with the hip-hop group Four Black Men Who Mean Business and his cameo in the two last films from the “Matrix” trilogy as the character named Counselor West.

The lecture is a free event. A question-and-answer session will follow the talk.
