Education Abroad Holds Third Annual Photo Contest

PULLMAN, Wash.—The Washington State University Education Abroad Office announced the winners of the third annual Education Abroad Photo Contest. Over 50 entries were submitted by students who studied abroad during 2008-2009 academic year. Contestants included titles and descriptions of each of their photos from around the world.

Education Abroad Advisor, Miranda Roberts, explained, “The photo contest provides returned participants a great opportunity reflect on the impact of their experience and an opportunity to share it visually with the WSU community.”

The winners of each of the four categories were:

Exploring Natural and Urban Landscapes category: “Patagonia” by Kevin Gowan, a senior who studied abroad in Valparaiso, Chile in the fall of 2008.

  2. Discovering Local Culture category:  “Riding the Energy” by Daniel Snook, a graduate student who studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark in the spring of 2009.
  3. Cougar Pride Abroad category:  “Look Out Below!” by Philip Denman, a senior who studied abroad in Auckland, New Zealand in the spring of 2009.
  4. International Friendships category: “Friendship Solid as a Rock” by Krista Meyer, a junior who studied abroad in Goldcoast, Australia in the spring of 2009.

This year’s photo contest winners were chosen by three judges who selected the winners based on craft and technical ability, content, and style and originality. Photo contest judges included Zachary Mazur, assistant curator of the WSU Museum,professional photographer and instructor  of digital photography at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash.; Karri Dieken, Fine Arts assistant professor at WSU and an MFA candidate; and Alan Abdulkader, professional photographer currently working on his masters degree in Architecture from WSU.

The winning photographs will be on display through May 2010 on the bottom floor of Bryan Hall and in the Terrell/Holland Library display case from Jan. 25 to Feb. 5, 2010. To view all the photo contest entries, go to http://www.ip.wsu.edu/education_abroad/photos-abroad-2009.shtml.

Photo contest participant, Nicole Norwood, who studied abroad in China said, “For me, study abroad was an amazing experience that expanded my horizons.  The photo contest was a great opportunity to reflect on my experience in China, and also to see a glimpse of the life changing-experiences of other students.”
